Prior to 1921, people who had Diabetes did not live a long life. If you had high blood sugar, it was controlled by diet only. In 1921, Frederick Banting, as surgeon discovered that by removing insulin from an animal’s pancreases, animals lived longer. In 1922, a young boy was in a Toronto Hospital with high bloods sugar and was injected with insulin. Soon his blood sugar came back down to normal. As a result, Banting was rewarded with a Nobel prize in medicine. The first synthetic “human” insulin was produced in 1978 and ever since then different types and forms of insulin have been invented. Currently there is no cure for diabetes, however, people can live a long life. As research progresses, perhaps, there will one day be a cure.
